According to former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (26-1, 17 KOs), he will return on May 5 in an ESPN televised headliner against Jayson Velez (24-4-1, 16 KOs) of Puerto Rico.
The Golden Boy Promotions card, which is part if their new fight series with ESPN, is tentative to take place at the Cosmopolitan Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
The event is taking place on the eve of Golden Boy's HBO Pay-Per-View event from the T-Mobile Arena - where Mexican stars Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will collide.
Gamboa, now promoted by Golden Boy, returned to the ring earlier this month. In his first fight since December of 2015, Gamboa won a ten round decision over Rene Alvarado. The performance was very lackluster, but Gamboa was coming back from long stint of being inactive.
The Olympic gold medal winner has been inactive over the years, but he's looking to get his career back on track this year for a world title shot in the near future. One of his targets is WBO super featherweight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko.
Earlier this month, Velez finally snapped a four fight losing streak which began in November of 2015.
Velez lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Ronny Rios in December 2015, Joseph Diaz in March 2016, an upset split decision loss to Rene Alvarado in July 2016, and then lost another upset majority decision to 6-0 prospect Alfredo Santiago in December.
Velez came back on March 4 to win a unanimous decision over undefeated super featherweight prospect Alberto Mercado.
