Fringe light heavyweight contender Yunieski Gonzalez will square off against Alex Theran tonight in a 10-round bout at The InterContinental in Miami, Florida.

At Thursday’s weigh-in, Gonzalez weighed in at 173 pounds. Theran weighed 189 pounds, 14 pounds above the light heavyweight limit.

Gonzalez (19-3, 15 knockouts), who was born and raised in Cuba and now resides in Miami, Florida, stopped Guillermo Romero in round 1 of his last bout on October 30. The win over Romero took place three and a half years after Gonzalez was stopped Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

The 35-year-old is best known for losing a disputed decision to Jean Pascal in July 2015. Almost five months later, Gonzalez would love by majority decision to Vyacheslav Shabranskyy.

Theran (22-4, 15 KOs), who resides in Barranquilla, Colombia, also weighed 189 pounds in his last bout on March 7, knocking out overmatched Leo Cassiani in the opening round. Theran has fought Cassiani three additional times, also winning those fights by knockout.

In his previous fight on July 13, the 30-year-old was stopped by fringe contender Alfonso Lopez after the end of round 4. Theran’s other losses have also been by knockout at the hands of Radivoje Kalajdzic in October 2018 and middleweight contender Tureano Johnson in January 2015.

In an eight-round bout, junior lightweight Luis Melendez, who is originally from Puerto Rico and now resides in Miami, will face Argentina’s Mario Sayal Lozano (18-4-1, 9 KOs), who has lost his last three bouts.

Melendez (8-1, 6 KOs) has won his last six bouts, four by knockout.

In junior middleweight action, unbeaten Derrick Cuevas (23-0-1, 15 KOs) of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico will square off against 42-year-old Damian Ezequiel Bonelli (23-8, 20 KOs), who has lost his last seven bouts, in a six-round bout.

Featherweight prospect Nelson Machado (16-0 1 NC, 8 KOs) will face Angel Antonio Contreras (10-2-1, 6 KOs) of Monterrey, Mexico in a six-round bout.

Machado, who is originally from Cuba and now resides in Miami, has won his last five bouts and is represented by MTK Global.

In junior welterweight action, unbeaten Antonio Williams (12-0-1, 6 KOs) of Richmond, Texas will square off against Juan Aguirre in a six-round bout. Aguirre (7-2-2, 5 KOs), who resides in Yucatan, Mexico, is winless in his last four bouts.

Tonight’s card will be promoted by Henry Rivalta.

This guy clearly got robbed against Pascal, about all he ever did though. Wouldn't be a bad stay busy for a few light heavyweights.
