Winky Wright Still Plans Return: Eyes Cotto, Canelo

By Luis Sandoval

Ronald “Winky” Wright recently spoke to BoxingScene.com regarding his career and his involvement in working with Chad Dawson for his upcoming fight this Saturday night at Staples Center against WBC light heavweight champion Bernard Hopkins.

Wright has been brought in to the Dawson camp as an advisor since he’s actually been in the ring with the ageless Hopkins when he fought him back in 2007. While he’s worked out with Dawson as far as conditioning, Winky however has not sparred or done any boxing training in quite some time.

“I haven’t put on a pair of boxing gloves or anything in a long time” said the veteran boxer with a smile. “So, I’m just doing a lot of running with [Dawson], sit ups, conditioning work”.

When asked what advice he’s given Dawson on what to expect when fighting Bernard, Winky didn’t hesitate to say “Watch his head. Bernard’s a dirty fighter. I take nothing away from him. He fought two great fights with Pascal. Like I said, when I fought him, I still felt I beat him”.

With Wright only having fought twice in the last 4 years and approaching being 40 years old, you have to wonder if and when he’ll get back in the ring if it all. But Wright is actually looking to make his return to the ring before the end of the year. He’s eyeing to come back in December and take a tune up fight before going for any big names. That’s something he didn’t do before his last fight against Paul Williams.

“I made a mistake by taking a Paul Williams fight without taking a tune up,” admitted Winky. “My timing was off a lot in that fight. There were things that I seen that I wanted to do but when I did it, I was a second behind”.

Winky plans to campaign at middleweight for one or two fights but his ultimate goal is to return to the Junior Middleweight division and target one of the champions there.
“There are a lot of fighters out there claiming to be champions that I really don’t think deserve to be champions and I’m coming to get them”.

While he didn’t address a certain fighter in particular, he did express interest in fighting current WBC champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBA Champion Miguel Cotto who is scheduled to fight Antonio Margarito on December 3rd at Madison Square Garden.

It will be 2 and half years since Wright’s last fight if he does indeed return to the ring in December. We’ll see if he can turn back the clock and be competitive once again and land a big fight against one of the big names.
