Mexican puncher Sergio Thompson (22-2, 20KOs) will not receive a mandatory shot at WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco, according to WBC President Jose Sulaiman. Last Saturday night at the Oasis Hotel Complex in Cancun, Mexico - Thompson stopped mandatory challenger Jorge Linares (31-3, 20KOs) in two rounds. The fight was billed as a "WBC eliminator" but Sulaiman says the bout was not a "final eliminator."

Linares was scheduled to face DeMarco (27-2-1, 20KOs) in a rematch on July 7th in Los Angeles. DeMarco will now have the opportunity to take a voluntary defense against an opponent of his choosing.

"Thompson was the number 16th [ranked contender] on the charts and he won overwhelmingly but he can not climb the [ratings] pole directly to [number] one. The ratings committee will find a good position [in the ratings] for Sergio and later he may be appointed as the challenger."
