LAS VEGAS – Vergil Ortiz Jr. continued his rapid rise within the junior welterweight division Saturday.

The 20-year-old prospect stopped veteran Roberto Ortiz in the second round of a scheduled 10-rounder on the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin rematch at T-Mobile Arena. The undefeated Dallas native dropped Roberto Ortiz twice in the second round before their bout was stopped.

Vergil Ortiz kept his perfect record intact by recording his 11th knockout in his 11th professional fight. Mexico’s Roberto Ortiz (35-4-2, 26 KOs) lost a third straight fight and lost by knockout or technical knockout for the third time in a pro career that began in January 2007.

Vergil Ortiz knocked down Roberto Ortiz with a right hand early in the second round. Roberto Ortiz got up, but he was still hurt.

Vergil Ortiz attacked him immediately and knocked him down again with a right hand that sent Roberto Ortiz to one knee. Roberto Ortiz reached his feet again, but referee Vic Drakulich didn’t think he was fit to continue.

Drakulich stopped the fight at 1:03 of the second round.
