Vasyl Lomachenko: The Fight With Rigondeaux Will Be Historic

On December 9th Vasyl Lomachenko (9-1, 7 KOs) defends his WBO World Super-Featherweight Title against Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KOs) in one of the most anticipated bouts in recent memory.

This match-up will be the first time two double-Olympic gold medallists have faced each other in the professional ranks and one which many are viewing as the biggest test in Lomachenko’s boxing career.

The Ukrainian spoke to ESPN about the difficulty of trying to making the fight with ‘El Chacal’ in the past. “I’ve wanted to make this fight a couple of years ago in another weight division when I was a [Featherweight]. We made it [now]. On December 9th it’ll be a great fight,” said ‘Hi-Tech’.

When asked about the challenges of fighting someone like the undefeated Cuban he responded confidently.

“I will try and show my best boxing and my best skill, this fight will be [historic], this fight is important," Lomachenko said.

“Rigondeaux is a top guy and one of the top pound-for-pound. For me it’s a big challenge!”

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with Roc Nation Sports and Madison Square Garden, tickets to the Lomachenko vs. Rigondeaux world championship event sold out two months in advance.  It is Lomachenko's second advance sellout in his past three fights.  His April 8 title defense against former world champion Jason Sosa sold out the MGM National Harbor one month in prior to the event.

"I am excited about Vasiliy stepping back in the ring before the year is over.  It is a great fight for all boxing lovers and the fans from around the world who asked for it," said Egis Klimas, Lomachenko's manager.  "It is a historic bout for boxing where for the first time, two boxers, two world champions, each holding two Olympic Gold medals, will meet in the professional ring.  I am looking forward to seeing it."

[QUOTE=RedZmaja;18221987]The thing is that the fans and other heavyweights still give credit to 260 lbs HWs beating 220 lbs HWs. Lennox got credit for beating smaller men, Klitschko got credit for beating smaller men and Joshua will get a lot…

[QUOTE=RedZmaja;18220530]How about 220 to 260 which happens at HW? You don't see those guys complaining. Anthony Joshua weighed in as 255 in his last fight, Wilder was 220. The weight difference between Joshua and Wilder will be much bigger by…

[QUOTE=b morph;18221066]People do complain about it though. That's why one of the sanctioning bodies, probably the WBC, wants to make a super heavyweight division. Or that's why the IBF requires a 2nd weigh in and a rehydration clause where a…
