Fringe lightweight contender Tony Luis won defeated Adrian Estrella by majority decision Friday night at the Civic Complex in his hometown of Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.

With the win, Luis improves to 28-3, 10 knockouts.

It was a crossroads clash between Luis and Estrella, with the winner likely receiving a ranking in the WBC. Luis was not eligible for a regional title belt that was on the line when he failed to make weight (137.6 pounds) during Friday morning’s weigh-in.

Estrella weighed in at the lightweight limit of 135 pounds.

Luis was the aggressor from the opening bell, closing the distance between the two and forcing Estrella back against the ropes. The 31-year-old Luis threw several combinations, connecting hooks and crosses to the head of Estrella.

As the bout progressed into the second half of the fight, Estrella began timing Luis, landing counter left hooks and right uppercuts. Sensing he was down in the fight, Estrella was the aggressor during the final two rounds, but Luis countered effectively, stunning Estrella at least once during the final round.

One judge scored the bout 95-95, while the other two judges scored the bout 96-94 in favor of Luis, who has now won his last nine bouts.

Estrella, who resides in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, falls to 29-4, 24 KOs. He has now lost three of his last four bouts.
