Team Cotto Do Not Rule Out Any Scenario, Canelo Too

by Rick Reeno

Gaby Peñagarícano, the legal adviser to former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30KOs), has informed BoxingScene.com that several scenarios are being explored for Cotto's fall return.

One of those scenarios, as already revealed by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, is having Cotto debut at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Schaefer has set aside a date of September 28th at the venue. Golden Boy co-promoted Cotto's last two ring appearances.

Peñagarícano refused to rule out the possibility of a match between Cotto and WBC/WBA 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs), who plans to return on September 14th. However, talks are still ongoing for a fight between Canelo and Floyd Mayweather Jr. - and the possibility of having the Mexican superstar face Cotto will have to wait until the Mayweather discussions conclude.

The other junior middleweights champions, Ishe Smith and Zaurbek Baysangurov, have already expressed their interest in facing Cotto in September, but both champions have tough defenses coming up in the month of July. Baysangurov will defend his belt against Demetrius Andrade on July 6 in Kiev, while Smith takes on dangerous Carlos Molina on July 19 in Las Vegas.

The final decision, regarding opponent and date, will be announced by Cotto in the near future. Last year Cotto used his official Twitter page to announce the December fight with Austin Trout. Cotto will look to snap a two-fight losing streak. In 2012, he dropped hard-fought decisions to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Trout.

"Nothing has been set. Nothing has been agreed to. We are weighing all options. It's still up in the air. When it's official, Miguel himself will let everybody know," Peñagarícano said to BoxingScene.com.
