Spence on Thurman: Why Not Try To Get My Belt? Why Not Unify?

Ask boxing fans which fights are top of their 2018 wishlist, and a certain all-American Welterweight unification is likely to feature frequently.

Errol Spence is hoping to unify his IBF crown against WBC and WBA 'Super' Champion Keith Thurman later this year.

First, he makes the maiden defence of his belt against Lamont Peterson, exclusively live in the UK on BoxNation on January 20th.

Speaking to ESPN's First Take, the Texas talent was asked if he tried to get the Thurman fight instead: "Nah, Keith Thurman wasn’t available. He didn’t answer the call," he revealed.

"I think the superfight right now is me and Keith Thurman. I have a belt. He has two belts, so why not unify? I feel like he’s the best fight right now. That’s the easiest fight to be made. We both have the same manager, and we fight on the same network. What can I do?"

Last March, Thurman unified against Danny Garcia, earning a decision victory. However, the Florida fighter has not boxed since that win in New York due to an elbow injury. He has now had successful surgery.

"I’ve been calling him out since I was 15-0. It’s time to fight. At first, he said he was going to burst my hot air balloon. He said everyone was gassing me up, and he had nothing to prove fighting me. I have a belt. He says he wants to be undisputed and capture all the belts, so why not try and get my belt?” questioned 'The Truth'.

For now, Spence is focused on former Super-Lightweight titlist Peterson and admits that he is not overlooking the Washington native: "I didn’t want to just fight anybody. I wanted a showcase fight, and I wanted to fight a top contender, a top guy.

"Lamont Peterson, he’s a top guy. Some people say he beat Danny Garcia. So, I wanted to fight a guy that I could show my skills against," added the southpaw.

Buy BoxNation to watch Errol Spence v Lamont Peterson, with Jorge Linares, Lucas Matthysse, Gilberto Ramirez and Ray Beltran all included in your first month.

I think I can answer that. Can't fight because ummm, Spence can't draw. Good guy but cant sell seats The real question should be why should Keith fight a guy that doesn't bring an extra dime to the table ?…

[QUOTE=Arma316;18422900]Thurman is clearly stalling. It doesn't take a damn year and change to recover from bone spurs. I personally get the sense that he just doesn't want that fight. Not until he either sees some signs of Spence slipping, or…

I think it's premature to say Thurman is ducking spence when he's out with injury. Thurman comes across as a fan of the sport and a student of the game, I'm sure he'll want to cement his legacy. I think…
