Sonsona Hungry To Avenge Loss To Wilfredo Vazquez

“Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona is eager to avenge his 4th round knockout loss to former WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr from February 27, 2012 when they clash in a rematch at Madison Square Garden in the undercard of the Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez – Miguel Cotto middleweight title fight on June 7.

Sonsona who is ranked No. 5 featherweight by the WBC, No. 7 by the WBO and No. 9 by the IBF returned to Manila from his hometown of General Santos City last May 1 and  continues to train at the gym of Dr. Rajan Yraola in Quezon City, under the watchful eye of hard-driving trainer Jun Agrabio.

After a strenuous workout which included 12 rounds of sparring against WBA No. 7 ranked Padjai Yongyuthgym who is ranked No. 7 super featherweight by the WBA , in which both fighters often traded vicious shots, Sonsona who currently weighs around 140 pounds said - “it was tough sparring against the Thai. He runs and is hard to hit. He also can punch” - although we watched Sonsona hurt Padai and force him to back off after connecting with some solid blows.

Sonsona told us he doesn’t want to lose to Vazquez again after being stopped in four rounds in Puerto Rico in their first meeting. He said that in his first fight against the Puerto Rican he was “short on condition and had no intensity. Besides, it was cold in the US where I trained and very hot when I got to Puerto Rico.”

The lanky southoaw vowed “this time I will train very hard and will avenge that loss.”

He said he wants to repeat his spectacular 3rd round knockout of former world super bantamweight champion Akifumi Shimoda in Macau when he faces Vazquez and will train in Boston at the camp of Martinez. Among the sparring partners  lined up is Javier Fortuna who Sonsona pointed out is a southpaw but said they have many other sparring partners at the gym.

The former world super flyweight champion said he was honored to be on a bigtime fight card at the famed Madison Square Garden and thanked promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, Sammy Gekllo-ani, Top Rank and his manager Dr. Rajan Yraola for getting him the opportunity for a rematch. He added, “I am longing to see Martinez.”

This going to be 10x better than the first fight, this isn't the 19 year old that Vasquez KO'd the first time they fought. Sonsona looks a lot better at the higher weight. Vasquez training in Mexico City with Memo…
