Sergio Martinez Targets Mayweather vs. Canelo Winner

By Pepe Rodriguez

WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KOs) is still recovering from several injuries suffered in his last defense against Martin Murray, but he wants to face the best possible opponent when he returns - likely in 2014. The fight that interests him the most is the winner of the upcoming clash between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr., taking place on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Facing the winner would require Martinez to move down to the junior middleweight limit of 154 or catch-weight in the middle.

"It is a very good option for me (to wait for the winner of that night). Floyd is the best fighter pound for pound, and Canelo, if he wins, would become one of the best pound for pound fighters. My idea is to always fight the best, not turn away from anyone and I would be ready to face the winner," Martinez said.

"It's a tough fight for both of them. Floyd has the experience, but you can not dismiss Canelo, who has the characteristics of a puncher. Floyd may be the favorite, but not by a very wide margin."

[QUOTE=hitking;13516072]Seeing how Floyd always manages to fight top guys, usually coming off signature wins. Floyd either has to be psychic or the luckiest man in the history of boxing to always manage to catch these guys when they either get…

[QUOTE=Mindrapist;13515376]That 80/20 offer was a publicity stunt for gullible fans. Do you really think Martinez gets $20m vs Floyd?? Get real. He's lucky if he gets 10%. Fighters who fight Floyd don't get percentages, they get appearance fees. Sergio would…

Nobody wants to see that fight, Martinez should've lost to Murray, Floyd would beat him comfortably.

[QUOTE=FerFAL;13515421]I'd bet money on that. Floyds a genius at making it look as if he's fighting stars when he's actually carefully cherry picking. Expired champs, slow fighters with a low KO rate, 22 year olds with no experience. Martinez would…

Man, f*ck Sergio. Don't even care about this talk from him anymore. He doesn't do anything to make it more possible.
