Sergio Martinez Eyes Career Decisions Next Week

By Ryan Burton

MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada -Former lineal champion Sergio Martinez was in town this weekend to catch the rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his countryman, Marcos Maidana.

Martinez last fought in June when he was stopped by Miguel Cotto. Martinez, who had surgery on his knee before facing the Puerto Rican, never looked right in the fight. He suffered multiple knockdowns and had trouble planting on his knee.

Martinez said that he hopes to continue with his career but everything hinges on his visit to an orthopedic surgeon on Monday. Martinez said that if he isn't given a clean bill of health he will retire from the sport and concentrate on promoting.

"It depends on what the doctor says. I have an appointment on Monday. If he was everything will be okay then I will fight again. If not then I will retire.

I've been promoting over 2 years so either way I will still be in the sport. I have good fighters like Kiko Martinez and others and I will look to promote more fighters," Martinez told
