Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, confirmed Thursday's report on BoxingScene.com, where WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez discussed certain details from a recent meeting with Schaefer and Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya. During the last few weeks, Marquez has openly discussed the possibility of becoming a free agent to pursue a third meeting with Manny Pacquiao. A A few days ago, Golden Boy met with Marquez to sort out his promotional status.
Golden Boy presented Marquez with two "attractive offers" to face either IBF junior welterweight champion Zab Judah, or lightweight contender Robert Guerrero - if he beats Michael Katsidis next Saturday in Las Vegas. Marquez is possibly going to return against either boxer in the month of July.
"Yes it's true, we made him a very attractive offer to face Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero or Zab Judah. They are very attractive terms and we are just waiting to hear back from Juan," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.
Marquez told several Mexican outlets that his Golden Boy contract expired at the end of March, but Schaefer says that is not necessarily true.
"Yes [the contract is still good]. I just refreshed his memory as to the terms of the contract and his obligations. Absolutely its good, no doubt about it," Schaefer said.
