Saunders: When I Face Golovkin or Canelo - You Will See My Best

WBO World Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders believes we won’t see the best of him until he steps in with either Gennady Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez.

The 28-year-old, who now faces St Helens’ Martin Murray on June 23rd after their April 14th clash was rearranged following an injury to the Hatfield boxer, sat down with Behind the Gloves where he revealed he is still waiting to produce a career-defining performance.

Many were impressed with his dazzling display against knockout artist David Lemieux when he skilfully outboxed the Canadian over 12 rounds on his own soil last December.

Saunders, however, says he is holding back and waiting for the night he can finally show how good he really is when he takes on one of the elite in the 160-pound division.

"I knew during the ring walk against David Lemieux that I was going to box well but I knew that wasn’t the fight that would get me up to bring that elite performance out. What people need to realise is that I play it safe now with fights because I want to get to that one big fight where I want to show what I’m about," said Saunders.

"When I get to that one big fight there won’t be as much running or doing what I do because I won’t care - I’m there – what I’ve worked for all my life it will be there in front of me.

"Against David Lemieux I could’ve stepped on him in some of them rounds, took a chance, and stopped him. I thought just do this for 12 rounds, you’re going to absolutely batter him and school him anyway.

"When I’m in there with one ‘the’ men – Golovkin or Canelo, then you’ll see the best of me. But that’s nowhere near the best of me – nowhere near," Saunders said.

It would be an interesting fight. Saunders impressed me greatly against Lemieux, I haven't seen him box that well ever. I think he's a stylistic nightmare for Canelo due to mobility and reach. He would be a better, bigger Lara.…
