Roman Martinez vs. Rey Ojeda in Play For December 3

By Rey Colob

A brawl between former WBO junior lightweight world champion Román 'Rocky Martinez (29-3-3, 17 KOs), and undefeated contender Rey Ojeda (18-0, 9 KO's), is being discussed for December 3 in the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The fight would be Martinez's official debut at lightweight, as he attempts to secure another world title.

The co-featured on tap, would see Alberto Mercado (13-0-1 and 3 KO's) super featherweight regional titles against the young veteran Jayson "La Maravilla" Velez (23-3-1 and 16 KO's).

Martinez has not fought since June 11 when he was knocked out by Vasyl Lomachenko at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  After that loss, Martinez had complained of weight issues while trying to make the super featherweight limit, and said he was likely going to move up to 135-pounds.

Meanwhile, Ojeda made his last bout in November 2015 and a few months ago he announced his retirement which seemed to have been caused out of frustration over the inability to get fights.

Meanwhile, Velez has lost his last three fights in the featherweight division and in his most recent setback he was shocked by René Alvarado in July - by way of split decision.

Mercado, however, is coming off a win on September 17th that saw him secure a tough split decision against Dominican Braulio Rodriguez to retain his belt and win the Latino FECARBOX title.
