Roman Martinez vs. Juan Carlos Burgos Likely Up Next

By Jhonny Gonzalez

The next step for the newly crowned WBO super featherweight champion, Roman Martinez (26-1-1, 16KOs), is likely a mandatory defense against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1, 20KOs), according to Martinez's promoter Peter Rivera of Puerto Rico Best Boxing.

Martinez won the title last Saturday in Las Vegas with a close twelve round split decision over Miguel Beltran Jr. Martinez-Burgos should take place in the next 90 days.

"Part of the commitment is to make a fight in the next 90 days. And we have to look for the fight with the number one ranked [contender] and that is Juan Carlos Burgos, a fighter who many know and has defeated Luis Cruz," Rivera told Carlos Narvaez.

Burgos will end up being too crafty for Martinez... Roman's going to have trouble with Juan's movement, defense, and combinations. Martinez is going to keep it interesting off of sheer heart, but his porous defense is going to have him…
