Rios-Chaves, Vargas-Novikov Close For 8/2, HBO

By Ryan Burton

Multiple sources have advised BoxingScene.com that an HBO televised doubleheader that will feature the return of Brandon Rios' (32-2-1) will take place on August 2nd in either Las Vegas, Nevada or Fresno, California.

An agreement is close to being reached for Rios to face Diego Chaves (23-1) of Argentina.  Chaves burst onto the U.S. scene last July when he lost to Keith Thurman in San Antonio, Texas in an exciting fight.  Even though he was stopped in the 10 round, Chaves put on a good show and stunned Thurman on a few occasions.

Rios last fight took place in November when he lost an unanimous decision to Manny Pacquiao in Macau, China while Chaves returned to the ring in February and stopped Juan Godoy in 10 rounds.

The co-featured fight will be newly crowned WBA/IBO junior welterweight champion Jessie Vargas first title defense. An agreement has yet to be finalized but Vargas will likely face undefeated contender Anton Novikov (29-0) of Russia.

[QUOTE=vman075;14586587]I'm a big Rios fan , but when was he not given his props? When he was fighting at lightweight people considered him the beast of the division. Rios vs Marquez was the fight everyone wanted. Then Abril outclassed him…

Thurman was a big step up for Chavez, I think he will be better because of that fight.

Good fight. And interesting that it might wind up in Fresno...Top Rank seems to be building something there with Jose Ramirez and Gary Salazar.

I'm most excited for Kovalev's return. I hope he fights Braehmer or Chilemba.
