Ricardo Mayorga Stops Zepeda in The Third, Wants Margarito

By Elisinio Castillo

Returning to the ring before a crowd of 3,000 fans in Managua, Nicaragua, former two division world champion Ricardo Mayorga (32-9-1, 26 KOs) stopped Mexican fighter Jaudiel Zepeda  (12-18-1, with 9 KOs) in the third round of a bout that took place at a catch-weight of 175-pounds.

Coming into this fight, Zepeda had not won a fight since October 2009, while Mayorga's last victory came in December 2014, when he defeated Mexican boxer Andrik Saralegui in Managua. In his last fight, which took place in August of 2015, Mayorga was knocked out in a rematch with three division beltholder Shane Mosley.

The fight began as a brawl, and both fighters had their moments. Zepeda was much bigger than Mayorga and letting his hands go, although he was shaken up by a few punches in the second round.

They continued to trade punches in the third, with Mayorga landing the bigger shots and doing more damage.

During the third round action, Mayorga landed a combination to the head and body which hurt Zepeda, who then walked away to a corner and turned his back. The referee ordered him to continue fighting, he appeared to refuse, and the fight was waved off.

Mayorga made it clear last week that his main comeback target is former world champion Antonio Margarito of Mexico and he hopes to get a fight with him by the end of the year.

After a four year retirement, Margarito returned to the sport last year and picked up two tough wins over Jorge Paez Jr. and Ricardo Alvarez.

The next fight for Mayorga, according to his handlers, may come against former world champion Yori Boy Campas, who fought for the last time a year ago in Montana. His last three fights were not endorsed by local boxing commissions. His record is 106 wins, 81 KOs, with 17 losses and 3 draws. Campas is riding a five fight win streak.

Motherf*cker throwing his hands up in the air like he just dethroned the champ. Considering this Zepeda guy was winless in his last 17 fights, I'm disgusted it took until the 3rd to put him away (and controversially). Mayorga looks…

How sad. I remember first seeing mayorga around 2002 and I thought to myself like this motherfuker is a serious brawler, one dimensional but a straight up dogg. My boy Margarito is going to kill this dude.
