Porter: Matthysse Fight Will Show What Pacquiao Has Left

Former world champion Shawn Porter is really looking forward to the upcoming showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Lucas Matthysse.

Pacquiao will challenge Matthysse (39-4, 36 KOs) for the WBA "regular" welterweight title on July 14th in Malaysia.

Now 39-years-old and coming off a loss, Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 KOs) is now in a must-win position and can't afford another loss at this late stage of his career.

Pacquiao has been out of the ring since losing a twelve round unanimous decision to Jeff Horn last July in Brisbane, Australia.

He will enter the contest without his longtime trainer Freddie Roach.

After 16 years of working together, Pacquiao has decided to remove Roach from the corner and instead will hand over the training duties to close friend Buboy Fernandez.

If Pacquiao is able to beat Matthysse in style, then Porter believes the eight division champion still has something left in the tank.

"I’ll be honest, I’ve seen Lucas Matthysse in a few exciting fights but outside of that, I never really cared too much for his boxing style or his fights. I think that we are really going to find out if Manny has anything left at all. You got a guy in Lucas Matthysse who can take a punch and definitely deliver one. He has experience and he’s no slouch," Porter told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.

"Manny Pacquiao has put on great performances over the years, but as of late, has really taken some steps down the ladder. I think if Manny dominates Matthysse, I think it shows that Manny has something left to offer this sport. If it’s close, depending on how Manny looks, we’ll find out whether or not Manny has anything left at all. I am looking forward to the fight just because of the fact that it’s Manny Pacquiao.

" I’ve always enjoyed watching him fight. Even though I’d like to see him give the sport up from the competitive side, I am looking forward to seeing what he has left."
