Petchbarngborn Kokietgym Defeats Diale For WBO Strap

by James Goyder

Thailand's Petchbarngborn Kokietgym won the WBO Oriental Super Flyweight title this afternoon, beating Filipino Ardin Diale by unanimous decision in Chaiyaphum.

Diale looked sharp in the opening exchanges as he danced around before exploding into life with fast combinations while Petchbarngborn stuck to his task and continuously pressed forwards looking to apply pressure to the Filipino.

Petchbarngborn couldn't match his opponent's hand speed but was able to trap him against the ropes and bang away to the body, receiving a warning in the fifth round after two left hooks in quick succession strayed below the belt.

After some entertaining early exchanges the action slowed at the midway point with the punch output of both fighters dropping which made for some close rounds. At the start of the 11th Diale exploded into life and got through with several uppercuts, which were his most effective weapon throughout the fight.

When the ten second warning sounded at the end of the final round both fighters suddenly found a new lease of life and went toe to toe, swinging wildly at one another right up until the bell. With so many close rounds it could have gone either way but Petchbarngborn took the unanimous decision with two of the judges having him ahead 115-113 and the third returning a more unrealistic sounding scorecard of 117-113.

With the win Petchbarngborn improves to 21-6-1 while Dial drops to 20-8-3. Also on this Kokiet Promotions card super featherweight Thai veteran Terdsak Kokietgym stopped Filipino journeyman Jun Piacidad in the third while Thailand's Ratchasak Kokietgym outpointed Michael Escobia from the Philippines in a super bantamweight matchup.
