Oquendo: I'm Working Hard, Very Focused on Cuellar

World ranked Jonathan "Polvo" Oquendo had his last workout in Puerto Rico, before going to the United States where he will complete his preparation for his fight against WBA featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar, on Saturday, December 5, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The fight will be broadcast on Showtime.

Oquendo (26-4, 16 KOs) travels this Sunday with his trainer Dennis Pantojas to Florida, where he will train until one week before the fight against Cuellar (27-1, 21 KOs).

"Jonathan will go this Sunday to Florida to get more focused for the fight against Cuellar. They are going to train there in November and then will travel to New York the week of the fight," said Peter Rivera, vice president of PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP).

Oquendo, ranked #9 by the WBA, #8 by the WBC and #11 by the IBF at 126 pounds, as well as #12 by the WBO at 130 pounds, trained today in the Caimito Gym in San Juan, with Pantojas, focused on the match against Cuellar, whom he described as "a good fighter and very strong."

"We are working and focused on Cuellar, a fighter who throws a lot of punches, a southpaw and very strong. For all that we are working, swimming, running in the mountains, looking for strength for my legs and acquiring the best condition. For the fight against Jhonny Gonzalez, we worked six full weeks and for this fight we are going in with more work. And now we will train in United States to be more focused," Oquendo said.

About his first time fighting in New York, Oquendo said that "I have family in New York and friends from my town, who will follow me. I'm very excited about fighting in New York for the first time."

Oquendo defeated former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez by decision last September 12 in an exciting bout. Also this year, the Puerto Rican won an unanimous decision in March over Gabino Cota.

Meanwhile, Cuellar, has fought just once in 2015 knocking former world champion Vic Darchinyan out in June. Cuellar became WBA featherweight interim champion in August 2013 when he won by decision over Dominican Claudio Marrero and has defended the belt four times with wins over Rico Ramos (UD), Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez (KO2), Ruben Tamayo (TKO5) and Darchinyan (KO8).

The main event on December 5 is the title defense of the WBA "regular" middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (30-1, 27 KOs) against former world champion Peter Quillin (32-0-1, 23 KOs).
