Opponent Named For Zab Judah 9/10 Ring Return

By Jake Donovan

An opponent has been named for Zab Judah's first fight in nearly two years. The former two-division champ will face Colombia's Hevinson Herrera on September 10 at The Space in Westbury (Long Island), New York.

Event handlers confirmed the opponent Friday morning.

Judah (42-9, 29KOs) confirmed his comeback plans earlier this month, a move that includes his signing a co-promotional agreement with Greg Cohen Promotions

“I am excited to be working with Zab Judah and David Schuster (of Winner Take All Productions, based in New York) and being able to bring such a stacked card to the Space at Westbury, said Cohen. We have a male superstar in Zab and a female superstar in Amanda Serrano on one show, plus some top contenders in action and some local up-and-comers. It's a terrific event and I'm proud to put the GCP stamp on it.”

The show will air on CBS Sports Network.

At his peak, Judah was among the best in the super lightweight and weltwerweight divisions. Four separate title reigns spanned the two weight classes, including his run as World welterweight champion with a 9th round knockout of Cory Spinks in their Feb. '05 rematch.

He has since fallen on hard times, barely above .500 in his past 16 fights. His ring return comes on the heels of back-to-back losses in 2013, dropping decisions to Danny Garcia and Paul Malignaggi at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Still, Judah—who turns 38 in October—believes he still has plenty left to offer the sport, hence the latest comeback tour.

Herrera (18-11-1, 12KOs)—a Colombian slugger now based in the Miami region—last fought in July, suffering a 3rd round stoppage loss to Gilberto Gonzalez in their Fox Deportes-televised headliner.

Additional bouts on the show:
  • Brooklyn's Amanda Serrano (24-1, 18 KOs) of Brooklyn will face South Carolina's Angel Gladney (8-11, 6 KOs) in the evening's co-feature, a scheduled six-round lightweight bout;
  • Queens-based middleweight "Mean" Joe Greene (26-1, 17 KOs) fighting for the second time in two months against a yet-to-be-named opponent
  • Local favorite Tommy "The Razor" Rainone (23-6, 5 KOs) faces Mexico's Francisco Javier Reza (14-14, 11 KOs) in a six-round middleweight fight;
  • Jesus "Chuy" Gutierrez (13-0-1, 4 KOs) of Las Vegas enters a six-round super lightweight bout against a yet-to-be-named opponent;
  • Miami's Steve Geffrard (12-2, 7 KOs) versus Newark's Cory Cummings (18-9, 13 KOs), 8 rds, light heavyweight;
  • New York's Dave Meloni (3-1, 1 KO) versus Cincinatti's Micah Branch, 4 rds, super featherweight;
  • Prospect Bienvenido Diaz (2-0, 2 KOs) of Prospect Park, NJ versus Benjamin Burgos (2-12) of Mount Pocono, PA, 4 rds, super featherweight;
  • Philadelphia's Samuel Teah (6-1, 2 KOs) versus Newark's Rashad Bogar (4-5-1, 2 KOs), 4 rds, super lightweight

Tickets are priced at Golden Ringside: $150, Ringside: $125 and General Admission: $60 and are available at and all Ticketmaster locations, , the Space at Westbury Box Office: 516.283.5566, or by calling the GCP office: 212.851.6425.

Good on em'. Looks like they are actually trying to create an old-timers circuit. Wonder when we'll start having alphabetical (did I just make up a word?) age divisions with their own "Diamond" and "Interim" and "Super" champions?

I want to see Paulie - Zab 2. The winner retires and the loser gets a world title shot. Make it happen boxing gods.

If Zab wins, and looks good doing it, he would be a good tune-up for Pacquiao, before Manny takes on Terence Crawford. Crawford likes to switch to southpaw alot, and Manny has not faced an elite level southpaw.
