Floyd Mayweather Jr. didn’t care to pay a sanctioning fee to the WBA on Saturday night.  That didn’t mean he left the ring after dominating Shane Mosley as any less than a champion.  When Mayweather briefly retired between 2008 and 2009, he retired as the reigning lineal Welterweight champion.

At a pound under the Welterweight limit, contested at the modern championship distance, and with Mosley regarded as no less than 1A in the division, Mayweather earned the right to be recognized as reassuming his former position.

He’s not the only fighter to make demands on a top slot.

While Fernando Montiel still needs another critical win or two to define himself as the true champion of his class, he scored an upset that put him in the driver’s seat to do so.  Where does the rest of the field at Bantamweight stack up?

Top Ten Contenders

1. Steve Cunningham (22-2, 11 KO)

2. Marco Huck (29-1, 22 KO, WBO, 3 Defenses)

3. Ola Afolabi (14-2-3, 6 KO)

4. Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (42-2-1, 31 KO)

5. Victor Ramirez (15-2, 12 KO)

6. Grigory Drozd (32-1, 23 KO)

7. Giacobbe Fragomeni (26-2-1, 10 KO)

8. Danny Green (29-3, 26 KO)

9. Troy Ross (23-1, 16 KO)

10. Denis Lebedev (20-0, 15 KO)

Rating Notes…Despite a stoppage loss to Steve Cunningham in an excellent 2007 fight, Marco Huck’s activity and winning ways are getting him closer to the top spot.  A win over Minto isn’t enough to push him over the top just yet…Cunningham is supposed to be headed towards a shot at the vacant IBF belt against Troy Ross.  Good fight…The Fragomeni-Wlodarczyk rematch, based on their 2009 draw, could be a sleeper for potential Fight of the Year action…Danny Green is making a nice late career out of beating men whose best days came years and divisions ago.  Will he make a real run at a real Cruiserweight?

7. Vyacheslav Senchenko (30-0, 20 KO, WBA Regular, 1 Defense)

8. Jan Zaveck (29-1, 17 KO, IBF, 1 Defense)

9. Selcuk Aydin (19-0, 15 KO)

10. Delvin Rodriguez (25-4-2, 14 KO)

Ratings Notes…While a case could be made to leave the title slot vacant due to Manny Pacquiao’s recent successes, the standing of Floyd before retirement, Mosley before losing to Floyd, and Pacquiao’s insistence on a catchweight prior to defeating Cotto make this an easy call…Of note, the CyberBoxingZone, the premiere online historical reference in boxing, had recognized Mosley as the rightful Welterweight champion prior to the Mayweather contest…and, with that out of the way, the question today is the same as yesterday: will fans ever see Mayweather-Pacquiao?  The wait begins and, really, is there another fight at Welterweight for either?  Andre Berto might say yes but no one else will...the lopsided losses of Mosley, Cotto, and Clottey is recent months show how wide the talent gap at 147 is right now.

Top Ten Contenders

1. Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym (40-1, 28 KO, WBA, 1 Defense)

2. Toshiaki Nishioka (36-4-3, 23 KO, WBC, 4 Defenses)

3. Steve Molitor (32-1, 12 KO, IBF, 0 Defenses)

8. Satashi Hosono (16-1, 12 KO)

9. Kohei Ohba (27-0-1, 11 KO)

10. Victor Fonseca (17-0, 9 KO)

Ratings Notes…What’s left with Caballero gone?  Probably more than is recognized now…Kratingdaenggym is a necessary export out of Thailand, one of the most improved and continually exciting in the game…a showdown with Nishioka could be an Asian classic…Vasquez Jr. looks like he might be ready to really live up to the old man…Molitor showed he was still the better of Ndlovu and will one day get a chance to show he can do better in the spotlight than he did against Caballero in 2008…122 lbs. hasn’t produced a Fight of the Year candidate yet in 2010.  It’s been a lock for at least one for most of the last decade-plus.  Eight months remain on the calendar.

Previous Champion: Israel Vasquez (2007-09, Vacated)

Consecutive Title Defense Record, Lineal or Other: Wilfredo Gomez - 17

Key Upcoming Jr. Featherweight Contests

05/20: #1 Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym vs. Shoji Kimura (23-3-2, 9 KO)

Bantamweight (116-118 lbs.)

03/27: #2 Anselmo Moreno (28-1-1, 10 KO, WBA) SD12 #5 Nehomar Cermeno (19-1, 11 KO)

04/30: #6 Fernando Montiel (41-2-2, 31 KO) TKO4 #1 Hozumi Hasegawa (28-3, 12 KO)

World Bantamweight Champion: Vacant

Vacant Since: Bernardo Pinango Vacated March 1987

Top Ten Contenders

1. Fernando Montiel (41-2-2, 31 KO, WBO, 2 Defenses; WBC, 0 Defenses)

2. Anselmo Moreno (29-1-1, 10 KO, WBA, 6 Defenses)

3. Yonnhy Perez (20-0, 14 KO, IBF, 0 Defenses)

6. Nehomar Cermeno (19-1, 11 KO)

7. Abner Mares (20-0, 13 KO)

8. Alexander Bakhtin (25-0, 11 KO)

9. Eric Morel (42-2, 21 KO, WBO interim)

10. AJ Banal (21-1-1, 17 KO)

Ratings Notes…Fernando Montiel had won belts in three divisions but never had a unification bout.  He made the most of his first, catching the excellent Hasegawa with a perfect bomb and following up with the finish.  He leaps to number one in this stellar class…Hasegawa drops to fourth behind a Moreno and Perez who are both on a roll in terms of elite Bantamweight wins, but drops no further given his long standing in class…Perez will have his hands full with Mares in May, a potential classic on the horizon…Bakhtin is closing in on a WBC mandatory and could crash the party big time when he gets the chance…Morel-Arce should produce a more immediate challenger to Montiel, excepting of course that Hasegawa could always ask for a rematch…Wladimir Sidorenko exits the ratings after a year of inactivity and with no fight pending…this division hasn’t been this good in a long time and doesn’t miss him.

Previous Champion: Bernardo Pinango (1986-87, Vacated)
