All signs pointed to Sugar Shane Mosley taking on Anthony Mundine on October 23rd in Mundine’s home country of Australia but things look to have hit a snag. Mosley was in attendance at Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s media day and shared that the fight with Mundine may not happen after all.
“Well I’m supposed to fight Anthony Mundine but they’re having money problems and sending money to escrow so that fight might not happen. It might not happen and I didn’t really want to fight at 154 [pounds] anyway so the next fight can be at 147. The problem now is the money. If they can’t put a measly $300,000 into an escrow account until we fight then how are we going to fight for the money they are talking about?” Mosley would tell BoxingScene.
“Why would I travel all the way out there to Australia to fight at 154 when I don’t even want to fight at 154; I want to fight at 147. So we’re having problems with that and that’s the problem that’s arising right now so I don’t know what’s going to happen. So that fight is really not a go. It’s not like I’m going to be fighting Anthony Mundine October 23rd. I don’t know what’s going to happen with that”.
Mosley was offered a lucrative amount to face Mundine but things may not happen if this money matter isn’t cleared up quickly. The former world champion repeatedly admitted he’d much rather stay at Welterweight and the only reason he even agreed to face Mundine at 154 pounds was because of the right opportunity.
“That’s it. It’s the right opponent [and]the right money. I believe I can beat Anthony Mundine. I believe I can knock him out. His chin is not that good so let me go to 154, pick up the money and then come back and fight at 147” said Mosley.
There is already a scheduled press conference in Los Angeles for the Shane Mosley-Anthony Mundine fight this Thursday. It will be interesting to see if things are worked out by then in order for this fight to proceed.
