BoxingScene.com was advised that a planned doubleheader is not taking shape as expected. HBO would like to put together a welterweight doubleheader on December 26. In the main event, Shane Mosley would defend his WBA "super" welterweight title against the probable challenger Joshua Clottey. As the co-feature, the network wanted an unification bout between WBC champion Andre Berto and IBF champion Isaac Hlatshwayo. Obviously the card is an infomercial to set up a Mosley vs. Berto bout in early 2010.
I've heard Berto is an unhappy camper with the deal. For starters, HBO only offered $750,000 as full payment for Berto-Hlatshwayo. Berto has practically made that amount for some of his previous defenses on the network. I've also heard that Berto is not exactly jumping for joy with the idea of having to make weight on Christmas Day. I'm sure if the money was right, Berto would find the inspiration to cut back on the sweets during the holiday season.
