Former IBU and USBA heavyweight titlist Eddie Chambers takes to the ring at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena for a six rounder against Prague’s Tomas Mrazek later tonight in his first outing under the guidance of new trainer Peter Fury.  Chambers MK II debuts on the undercard of Stuart Hall’s IBF bantamweight title defence against Martin Ward, which is promoted by Dennis Hobson and Frank Warren and will be shown live on BoxNation here in the U.K.

The 32-year-old left James Ali Bashir and hooked up with the Fury family earlier this year following back-to-back defeats—to Tomasz Adamek (L UD 12 in 2012) and Thabiso Mchunu (L UD 10 at 200lbs last August) respectively—and a disastrous attempt to crack the cruiserweight division.

Following these losses, Chambers, 36-4 (18), seemed a long way away from a title crack of any description, nevermind another attempt at consensus heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko, who stopped Chambers in the 12th round in March 2010.  “Fast” Eddie’s decision to decamp to Europe and hook up with Tyson Fury’s uncle is an attempt to rediscover the form that led him to his IBF, WBO and IBO world title crack, and his new trainer told me that the process of reinvigorating the Philadelphian’s career is going very well indeed.

“I’ve found it perfect (working with Chambers), he’s a lovely guy, very well mannered and he’s shown desire by coming over here to start anew,” said Fury.  “He has already added some natural weight [Chambers was 196lbs for his last fight]—he looks a lot better since he came over to us and is really coming on.

“Eddie’s tipping the scales at 100 kilos, which is good as he was 90 when he came to us and we took some off then turned it to solid muscle weight.  Physically he’s doing very well.”

Mrazek is not expected to upset the applecart—then again Mchunu was supposed to be a hard but ultimately winning workout for the American stylist—but the Czech boxer is coming off a decision win over the faded human remains of former British titlist and world title challenger Danny Williams (W SD 6 in December).  The 33-year-old should provide more than enough of a foil to give Chambers rounds in the bank ahead of a mooted appearance on a Frank Warren bill at London’s Copper Box Arena on May 12.

“We need to get him in there, get him going again and then move him on,” Fury concurred.  “Eddie’s a gentleman, very easy going, he gets on with his job and is very professional—it’s lovely working with him so I want to see him do well again.

“There’s things to work on, lots of hard work ahead, but we know it takes time.  All you need is that bit between your teeth to learn, improve and try new things—he’s got that desire.”

He added: “Eddie’s dedicated himself again, he’s seen the results of his work and is getting that confidence back.  Eddie’s seeing a physical change in himself—it is always good for a fighter to see the physical results of their hard work.”
