One fighter will take a major step forward toward contender status if he comes out victorious in a battle of two unbeaten welterweights.
Mikael Zewski will fight Konstantin Ponomarev in a 10 round bout on May 1, Top Rank matchmaker Brad Goodman told BoxingScene.com.
The Zewski-Ponomarev bout will take place inside the Chelsea Ballroom at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout will precede the WBO lightweight title bout between Ray Beltran and Takahiro Ao.
In his last bout on December 13, Zewski (26-0, 20 KOs) won a hard-fought 10 round majority decision over Jeremy Bryan. The decision win snapped a string of five consecutive knockout wins for the French-Canadian.
The Russian-born Ponomarev (27-0, 13 KOs) won a hard-fought eight round unanimous decision over Stave Claggett on January 24. The 22-year-old does have wins over veteran fighters Cosme Rivera and Rogelio Castaneda.
Zewski will be defending his NABF title against Ponomarev.
