Miguel Cotto Surgery a Success, Rehab To Last About Three Months

By Miguel Rivera

Former four division world champion Miguel Cotto is already back at home after being successfully operated on, on Wednesday morning, to repair an injury to his left arm.

The injury took place during the fight last Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City, against American Olympian Saddam Ali.

"Miguel entered [on Wednesday] - at around 7:30 in the morning - into the operating room under the tutelage of Dr. Omar Morales. Thank God the operation lasted less than expected and at noon Miguel was already on his way home, " said Bryan Perez, vice president of operations of Miguel Cotto Promotions, to Sara Del Valle Hernández.

Pérez added that the surgical intervention was successful and that Cotto left in good spirits. He also stated that the orthopedist informed them that "there was nothing to worry about".

"Now what he should do is have absolute rest and follow the instructions hew was given to have a successful recovery," said Perez.

Cotto was diagnosed with a ruptured tendon of the distal biceps of his left arm. This injury was caused when he attempted to throw a body shot, that failed to connect, during the seventh round of the of the fight against Ali, which was televised on HBO.

That fight supposed the retirement bout of the six time Puerto Rican champion, and a final fight which the boxer hoped he would walk away with another victory and retire with his hands held high. Cotto was a heavy favorite coming in, against a boxer who was moving up from the welterweight division.

However, Ali controlled the second half of the fight and several of the early rounds to secure a twelve round unanimous decision and was crowned the junior middleweight champion of the World Boxing Organization (WBO). The scores were 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112.

After this operation, Cotto must undergo a rehabilitation process that will last about three months.
