Miguel Berchelt Looks Forward To a War With Miguel Roman

By Miguel Rivera

After the second successful world title defense that Miguel 'Alacran' Berchelt made of his World Boxing Council super featherweight title with a third round stoppage of Maxwell Awuku last Saturday night, he took full aim at the the fighters in his weight class.

He also mentioned that after his optional fight against Awuku, he looks forward to the mandatory showdown against Miguel Roman, who beat Orlando Salido in December. Roman shocked Salido to secure the opportunity to get the mandatory shot.

Roman fought on the same night, and knocked out Colombian Aristides Perez.

Now the stage is set for the Roman vs. Berchelt showdown.

"I'm ready for Miguel Roman, I'm ready to face him halfway through the year. I would love it to be in the month of July. I will be ready to go to the ring," Berchelt explained.

"Also, I'm sure that I can measure myself against the top opponents because I'm going to be a champion for a while. Of course Vasyl Lomachenko, Kenichi Ogawa and Alberto Machado are all welcome."

Similarly, Berchelt will not be bothered if the other champions are going to decline his challenge for a unification

"They are all great champions, but I have the green and gold belt, the one that Muhammad Ali had, Julio Cesar Chavez had, so I only want to face the big names. If they do not want to expose their championships against me, that's fine," Berchelt said.

On the other side of the fence, Roman is also hoping that their showdown takes place in the coming months.

"We won this fight, now we hope that the very next will be the world title bout against Berchelt. This is the best moment of my career. We closed 2017 with a triumph over Salido and this year it should be even better, because we will win the green and gold belt of the WBC. Against Berchelt, I need to fight with more intelligence and throw more punches," Roman said.
