Michael Conlan Could Be Set For Summer Homecoming

By Elliot Foster

Michael Conlan could be set for a summer homecoming.

The undefeated former Olympian has long spoken of his desire to fight as a professional in his native Northern Ireland.

Conlan, 26, has raced to 6-0 with five early since turning over under Bob Arum and Top Rank back in September 2016.

He made his professional debut in March last year at Madison Square Garden in New York.

And although his next fight, on May 12, is back at the same venue, as part of the undercard to Jorge Linares’ WBA lightweight title defence against two-time Olympic and two-weight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine, Conlan is eager to have a homecoming outing.

That homecoming outing could well come on June 30 at the SSE Arena in Belfast.

Promoter Frank Warren, who looks after Michael’s former world title-challenging brother Jamie Conlan, has booked the venue to stage a card featuring a clash between Joe Ham and Tyrone McCullagh in a British super-bantamweight title eliminator that is also for the vacant Celtic title.

Conlan, according to BoxRec, will also fight on the bill, with Warren dropping a hint recently that he will be named as part of the card, which is expected to be screened exclusively live on BT Sport and BoxNation, when it is formally announced in the coming weeks.

Further details will be revealed in due course.

IN OTHER NEWS: Liam Cameron, 20-5 (8), will now defend his Commonwealth Middleweight Title against Nicky Jenman on April 27 at the Ice Sheffield Arena following Danny Butler’s withdrawal from the contest.

With the show televised live on Freesports (Freeview 95, Freesat 252, Sky 424, BT 95, Talk Talk 95), southpaw Jenman steps into the fray having fought most recently in March, losing a tight decision for the IBO Continental Middleweight Title against Andrew Robinson.

With 10 defeats from 31 outings, the Brighton fighter – a former Southern Area Middleweight Champion – knows this is his big opportunity and will be determined to cause an upset in Cameron’s Sheffield backyard.
