According to Jeff Powell of Daily Mail, Sky has been in fierce competition with Frank Warren’s BoxNation to secure the British broadcasting rights to Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao, which takes place on May 2nd from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The paper notes that BoxNation offered the higher upfront fee of guaranteed payment, but Sky is believed to have gained the advantage by offering the promoters a share of their pay-per-view revenue in addition to a guaranteed fee. But, Sky picking up the show may come at a higher price to the consumer - with a potential pay-per-view markup of £20.
In the United States, Showtime and HBO will join forces to stage the event. In Mexico, reports indicate that a deal is very close for network rivals TV Azteca and Televisa to simultaneously gain the broadcast rights.
