ASHLEY THEOPHANE has been promised a world title fight by his promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The London light-welterweight is a member of Mayweather’s ‘Money Team’ and fights under the pound-for-pound great’s promotional banner.
He is the only Brit in the camp and Mayweather is working on delivering his man a world title shot with Adrien Broner.
Theophane, 35, takes on Steve Upsher on the undercard of Mayweather’s clash with Andre Berto on Saturday in Las Vegas.
If he wins and Broner claims the WBA light-welterweight in October against Khabib Allakhverdiev then the big clash is on.
Theophane said: “I had a good talk with Floyd over the weekend. He told me he is going to get me a world title shot if I get by this guy.
“The plan is to fight Broner if he wins his fight in October.
“Floyd told me at the weekend he is working on a title shot for me. That is the motivation that I need.”
London-born Theophane moved to Las Vegas two years ago after he lost the British title to Darren Hamilton.
‘Treasure’ had sparred with Mayweather in the past and the American invited him over to join his promotional company.
The three-year deal started disastrously as Theophane lost to little-known Pablo Cesar Cano on the undercard of Mayweather against Saul Alvarez in 2013.
But he has responded since with five wins on the bounce and Mayweather handed him a stunning Chrysler 300 car with the number plate ‘TMT Ash’ to reward his hard work.
Theophane said: “Floyd always tells me I work hard. He is talented but he admires hard work.
“He knew I had been a professional for 10 years but I never had a promoter to back me so that is why he said he would give me a chance.
“I’m from the UK but I could never get a Frank Warren, a Matchroom, a Mick Hennessy, a Frank Maloney, to back me but I came over to America and I got Floyd Mayweather to back me.
“It took me 10 years to get here but it shows if you work hard and don’t give up it can still happen. If I retired today I would be content.
“I have been British champion, been world number four and I’ve fought some good fighters.
“There are a lot of boxing folk in the UK that don’t think highly of me but that doesn’t matter because the number one boxer in the world thinks highly of me.”
Theophane will be ringside after his fight on Saturday to watch Mayweather’s final bout as he looks to extend his unbeaten record to 49 against Berto.
The Londoner has sparred with the American to help them both prepare for their fights and hopes his mentor comes back for one more.
He added: “Maybe when he retires he might get bored and come back for one more fight, we don’t know.
“If I was him I would go to beat the record. But you don’t know. It would be good if he did, to finish on the round number. The big 50.”
