Marquez: Abner Mares Could Be The Next Mexican Great

By Rene Umanzor

Four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez was very impressed with Abner Mares' ninth round stoppage of Daniel Ponce De Leon to capture the WBC featherweight title. The victory gave Mares (26-0-1, 14KOs) his third world title in a third weight class.

"I think he's a great fighter who has proven himself in the ring and I see him as the next solid Mexican champion that we wil have in our country. I believe that Mares has the ability to keep winning and keep on the path to conquer another division. I can only congratulate him," Marquez said.

"I think people have not given him the recognition that he deserves, but he has earned his position and nothing was ever given to him."

Mares looked really good Saturday night. He deserves the buzz he's getting.

Mares would outbox Santa Cruz. Cruz gets hit FARRRR too much, its gonna cost him at the higher weights. Mares is the goods IMO

[QUOTE=lopetego;13338326]GTFO, Canelo's resume at 22yo is WAY better than Marquez' was at that same age. Marquez had fought nothing but complete bums and he won his first paper title (vacant btw) at 23yo against a cab driver called Cedric Mingosey…
