Malignaggi Still Injured, Hopes To Return in The Fall

By Ryan Burton

Former junior welterweight champion Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi suffered a ruptured tendon in the knuckle of his middle finger in his right hand during his dominating victory over Jose Miguel Cotto this past April in Las Vegas, NV.

The fighter of Italian descent told BoxingScene.com that he hopes to be able to throw a punch in August and begin training however his knuckle is still bothering him.

"I'm hoping to be able to punch in August but it is still very tender.  I'm going on vacation to Italy next Friday for a month.  When I get back we will see," Malignaggi told Boxingscene.com.

Malignaggi said that he doesn't have a time table for his return to the ring but hopes to return before the year is over.

"I can't really say when I will be back until I know that my knuckle is healed. I am hopeful that later this year I can get back in the ring," said Malignaggi.

Prior to the Cotto fight Malignaggi had said that he hoped to face IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck before the year was over.

Zaveck was looking to make a name for himself in America.
