On November 5th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas - Jessie Magdaleno (24-0, 17KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Nonito Donaire (37-4, 24KOs) to capture the WBO super bantamweight championship.

The three official judges had him well ahead, with scores of 116-112, 116-112, 118-110. Their encounter was widely viewed as the best fight of the Top Rank pay-per-view event, which featured Manny Pacquiao vs. Jessie Vargas on top.

Magdaleno used his speed and quick reflexes to outbox and outhustle Donaire in several of the rounds. Donaire came on very strong in the final two rounds and was going for a knockout, but it was too late.

After the fight was over, Donaire expressed his disappointment with the scoring. Donaire believed he was well ahead on the cards and questioned how the judges could have scored it for Magdaleno.

"I definitely won the fight. Losing never crossed my mind,” said Donaire. “I never thought I could lose this. I had a great second half and I thought I controlled the fight. This is unbelievable."

There were some media members at ringside who scored the fight a draw and others who did have Donaire winning a close decision. But the majority had Magdaleno as the winner of a close fight.

Donaire is banging the drums for a rematch. Because Magdaleno was the mandatory challenger, there was no rematch clause.

Their mutual promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, is not ruling out the possibility of a rematch in 2017.

While Arum likes the idea of matching them them for a second time, he hasn't spoken to either boxer since their fight. Once he speaks with them, a rematch will be one of the possibilities they'll discuss.

"The truth is, I haven't talked to either of them, but people did question the result of that fight and a rematch could very well be appealing. It certainly would be appealing to me, but I can't say that I've talked to either of them yet," Arum told BoxingScene.com.
