Luis Ortiz Wants Tyson Fury Showdown Next

By Ryan Burton

Top heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz (28-1) isn't looking for a tune-up after his March loss to WBC champion Deontay Wilder. Ortiz was stopped in 10 rounds by Wilder but nearly finished off the Alabama native in the 7th round of their action packed fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

BoxingScene.com recently spoke to the Cuban's manager Jay Jimenez - who said that former WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO champion Tyson Fury and top contender Alexander Povetkin are at the top of Ortiz's wish list for his next fight.

With Wilder and WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO champion Anthony Joshua deep in negotiations and Povetkin on standby as Joshua's likely alternative if the Wilder fight doesn't take place, Ortiz believes a fight against Fury makes the most sense.

The 29-year-old Fury returned from long layoff last Saturday when he defeated Sefer Seferi who quit on his stool after the fourth round of their lackluster fight.

It was Fury's first bout since November of 2015, when the undefeated former champ traveled to Germany to win a twelve round unanimous decision over Wladimir Klitschko in a major upset. It was Klitschko's first loss in over 10 years.

"Luis feels Fury is the best fight to make besides Povetkin because Wilder won’t offer the rematch that we have been asking for," Jimenez told BoxingScene.com.

Fury is slated to return on August 18th against an opponent to be determined on Carl Frampton's undercard which will take place at Windsor Park in Belfast. He likely will take another tune up fight but Ortiz would be ready to go if they decide they want to step up their level of competition.

"Fury or Povektkin. He is top 5 in our book.  Either one is what we want for Luis' next fight," said Jimenez.
