Luis Nery Waiting For a Reply From The World Boxing Council

By Miguel Rivera

Former world champion Luis Nery, accompanied by his team headed by adviser Guillermo Brito, appeared on Friday for a hearing with the World Boxing Council - after failing to make weight on the scale and having to vacate the bantamweight crown.

The WBC asked him to give an explanation for not being able to make 118 pounds for the scheduled defense of the title in a rematch against Shinsuke Yamanaka.

Nery weighed in at 123 pounds - which is five above the limit and one-pound above the super bantamweight limit, and in a second attempt he weighed in at 121, which is still in the super bantamweight division.

Nery demolished Yamanaka for a knockout victory.

But because of the weight mishap, Nery was banned for life from boxing in Japan.

At the moment the boxer has been suspended by the WBC, until the sanctioning body determines his punishment.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman was not happy that Nery waited until the final week of the fight to cut off the last few pounds.

"We were not notified of any response [from the WBC]. Just today as a team, and obviously Luis Nery, explained the reasons why he could not make the 118 pound limit, obviously accepted the error and in the end showed his total interest in fighting for the WBC title again.. that is the only one that interests him," Guillermo Brito Jr. told ESPN Deportes.

"We were before Mauricio Sulaiman, who is the president and some members of the Governing Board, but they did not give us an answer. We hope that there is no sanction, but if that is the case, it will be obeyed because Nery told them that he was willing to start from scratch and submit to the processes they ask him of to look for the WBC title again.

"Yes, it was a mistake from Nery, from the whole team, and we are willing to have the necessary exams done to Luis, to follow the criteria they mention to have that opportunity again, although we will not know until the next week."
