Lubin's Coach: Erickson Will Send a Message To 154-Pound Division!

Former title challengers Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (22-1) and Terrell Gausha (21-1-1) return to action Saturday night when they square off in a Showtime main event.  The fight takes place at the Mohegan Sun and like most sporting events during the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be in an environment without fans.

The fight has major implications in the stacked super welterweight division. The winner of the fight will become the mandatory challenger to the Jermell Charlo-Jeison Rosario unification bout that co-headlines a Showtime pay-per-view event a week later.

Lubin’s trainer Kevin Cunningham is very aware of what is at stake and expects his charge to elevate his game to another level.

“We’ve had a tremendous training camp and Hammer’s ready to go. The winner of this fight is the WBC mandatory. So whoever wins between Charlo and Rosario, has to face the Lubin-Gausha winner. The stakes are extremely high and Hammer’s prepared to seize the moment. Terrell’s an Olympian and fundamentally sound so we’re expecting him to be at his best,” Cunningham told

Gausha, who represented the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games, last fought in May of last year when he battled Austin Trout to a split draw.

Lubin has reeled off 4 wins in a row against solid competition but a spectacular performance against Gausha will make an even bigger statement.

“This fight Hammer sends a clear message to the rest of the division,” said Cunningham.

Lubin and Gausha were scheduled to fight last October but Gausha suffered an injury in camp that forced him to pull out of the fight. Lubin faced late replacement Nathaniel Gallimore instead and defeated him via unanimous decision.

[QUOTE=PBR Streetgang;20762109]I like Lubin but I feel like he has to do more to justify a rematch against Charlo. He got blasted out bad in the first. A stoppage of Gausha would help but I feel like he needs to…
