GENNADY GOLOVKIN’s promoter is set to speak with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s team today as talks over a rematch get underway.
The pair’s clash last week ended in controversy after judge Adalaide Byrd scored the fight 118-110 in favour of Alvarez despite it being a close fight which most believe Golovkin won.
Fans are desperate for the rematch and both sides seem keen as the Kazakh’s promoter Tom Loeffler is set for talks with Golden Boy president Eric Gomez, who works with Alvarez.
The likely date for the second meeting would be May 5 but a location is one of the parts of the contract that will be discussed.
Loeffler said: “I am going to talk to Eric today. I know HBO (the US broadcaster) wants the fight again and the fans want to clear up the first fight.
“I will sit down with Eric and see what it looks from the Canelo side.
“It took a while to make the first fight but it must give them confidence that Canelo was only the second person to ever go 12 rounds with Gennady and in the rematch you think he would have more confidence.
“You would think Canelo would be the one jumping at the rematch if he believed he won and there would be no problem doing the rematch.”
The first meeting between the pair took three years to make but that was mainly down to Alvarez’s team allowing their man to grow into a fully-fledged middleweight as well as allow his profile to increase.
So the hope is that this will not be such a difficult set of negotiations especially after the interest the first fight created.
A second meeting would be even bigger and more lucrative for all involved if they can agree a deal.
But Golovkin’s team are also considering their other options in case the Mexican turns down a rematch.
The Kazakh, who remains unbeaten, would be more likely to fight again in February or March if the May fight with Alvarez does not happen.
