WBO world super welterweight champion Liam Smith has played down Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez’s recent victory over Amir Khan as having any bearing on their September 17th clash in America.

Speaking with Kugan Cassius, ‘Beefy’ explained: “I don’t fight like Amir, people are looking too much into the Khan fight. It’s kind of irrelevant for me, I don’t take no fear from it.”

The Merseyside maverick makes the third defence of his WBO World Title and is relishing mixing it with one of the best out there.

“If I’m world champion and knocking fights back with certain people that doesn’t sit right. I’m ready to go in with anyone in the world. I’m going in to win and not make the numbers up.”

With Canelo vacating his WBC world middleweight title, there has been an element of criticism directed at the flame haired Mexican, but Smith insists it’s not his problem.

“The American fans may be unhappy, but it’s not anything to do with me. That’s the backlash from him not fighting Golovkin. I understand the fans, I haven’t fought in America but I guarantee after September they will know who I am.”

Smith believes the hype around the Golden Boy Promotions kingpin is overplayed.

“When you look into his fights closely, Angulo was made for him. He struggled with Lara and Trout, he didn’t budge Matthew Hatton, and he didn’t hurt Ryan Rhodes much. There’s only a handful of fights where he’s been very good. I’m not saying I’m Mayweather but when you look into it properly people go on that he’s a monster, he’s been promoted very well.”

Liam’s younger brother, unbeaten Super-Middleweight starlet Callum added: “I don’t think he would have took the fight if he didn’t believe. Liam is underrated, Canelo is beatable. He’s a very good fighter, but so is Liam. 100% he can win.”
