By Francisco Salazar

Heavyweight LaRon Mitchell dropped Scott Alexander once in route to a 10 round unanimous decision late Friday night at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

Mitchell, who is a physical education teacher at an Oakland middle school, improves to 15-0, 14 KOs, while Alexander drops to 12-2-2, 6 KOs.

Mitchell, who holds amateur wins over Donovan Dennis and Dominic Breazeale, dropped Alexander in round three.

Alexander attempted to use his athleticism to overcome Mitchell's more-polished pedigree, but the southpaw Mitchell landed the more-effective punches throughout the bout.

Scorecards were 98-91, 98-91, and 97-92 for Mitchell.

"It wasn't very pretty," said Mitchell after the fight. "But I'll take an ugly win over a pretty defeat any day of the week."

Alexander's four-bout unbeaten streak was snapped.

Both fighters are promoted by Thompson Boxing, who promoted the fight card.

Welterweight Juan Ruiz (17-0, 10 KOs), who signed a promotional deal with Thompson Boxing before the fight, won a hard-fought eight round majority decision over Wilberth Lopez. One judge scored the bout 76-76, while the other two judges scored the bout 78-74 in favor of Ruiz.

Lopez drops to 15-6, 10 KOs.

Lightweight Juan Reyes (13-3-3, 2 KOs) won a six round unanimous decision over Cesar Villarraga (9-3, 4 KOs). Scorecards were 58-56, 58-56, and 60-54 for Reyes, who resides in nearby Riverside.

Nineteen year-old junior bantamweight Ricardo Espinoza (10-1, 8 KOs) survived two knockdowns in the opening round to win a hard-fought six round unanimous decision over Javier Lapizco. Scorecards were 57-56, 57-56, and 58-56 for Espinoza, who also dropped Lapizco once in the opening frame.
