Khan Smiles: Lo Greco Will Get Slow Beating, Slow Punishment

By Chris McKenna, courtesy of The Daily Star

AMIR KHAN promised a “slow beating” to embarrass Canadian Phil Lo Greco after the pair clashed at a heated press conference yesterday.

The British welterweight star threw water at his opponent after he riled him by mocking his marriage and family problems as the pair met face-to-face at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool.

Promoter Eddie Hearn had to keep both men apart as their teams stormed onto the stage, before security guards moved in to calm down the situation.

The British Boxing Board of Control are likely to take a dim view of proceedings.

But Khan has promised it will be more than water getting thrown when he faces Lo Greco at the Echo Arena on April 21in his first fight since he was knocked out by Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in May 2016.

Khan said: “He didn’t get to me in that I got angry, I just wanted to put him in his place.

“There is no point talking big, talking all this trash thinking he’s going to get under my skin.

“He’s not going to. I’m 31, I’m very experienced.

“He’s going to get such a beating, he’s a guy you give a slow beating to. You make him look stupid.

“He’s coming to my country, he’s coming to my territory and time will tell. He’s got a big gob on him that is going to get him into trouble. He needs a slow punishment.”

Lo Greco, who has lost three of his 31 fights and is seen as an easy comeback fight for Khan, had already put up social media posts mocking the Bolton fighter and labelling him a “girl”.

But he went a step further yesterday by bringing up Khan’s public spat with his family and his issues with his wife, Faryal.

Khan had tweeted accusations that world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and his wife had an affair, something he later apologised for.

And Lo Greco said: “After the Canelo loss you went on a losing streak - family, wife, and then you go out and tweet to the heavyweight champion of the world. What is wrong with you, mate?”

It was at that point that Khan got up from his seat to chuck water at the Canadian.

Khan added: “If it is boxing I smile it off, if they say I can’t take a shot, that’s fine but when it gets to family then I have to stand my ground.”

This fake beef with a guy who's more or less completely irrelevant at the world level just makes Khan look even more pathetic. He's done nothing but embarrass himself for years now.

If Khan has a hard time with this guy he’s done.
