It's been a bit of a roller coaster ride for young lightweight contender Jose Felix the past few days. Coming into the week he was scheduled to be face Yakubu Amidu from the Florentine Gardens in Hollywood as part of the 'Solo Boxeo' telecast on UniMas on June 13th.
Then the 23-year old from Los Mochis, Mexico was chosen to fill in for Ray Beltran - who is suspended indefinitely for testing positive for steroids following his May 1st bout in Las Vegas against Takahiro Ao - versus Humberto Soto as the opener on HBO's broadcast from the StubHub Center against Humberto Soto.
But just as quickly as he accepted the assignment, Soto, pulled out of the bout citing an injury to his left knee on Tuesday. So Felix goes back to his original bout.
"It's a tough break," said his adviser, Oscar Valdez. "He really wanted to showcase his skills on HBO and make a move in his career. It was a risk he was willing to take on short notice but there's nothing we can do about it now. He's here in Los Angeles now, training and we're going to finish up our training camp for next week. There's nothing we can do about this. Top Rank was kind enough to give us that opportunity, unfortunately, it didn't happen but you can't cry over spilled milk."
"But his full focus now is on June 13th and Amidu."
