Jose Benavidez vs. Jorge Paez Set Go on 5/15 in Phoenix

By Ryan Burton

Jose Benavidez Sr. has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that his son's return to the ring will be a home coming for the Phoenix resident. The fight will take place on May 15th against Jorge "Maromerito" Paez Jr. (38-5) at the US Airways Center which is the home of the Phoenix Suns.  Jose Benavidez Jr. (22-0) will be defending the WBA interim super lightweight title he won in December when he defeated Mauricio Herrera in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fight will be broadcast on truTV and will be the third installment of the new agreement between truTV and Top Rank to air professional boxing. The first two cards take place on May 1st and May 8th.

The elder Benavidez also said that Junior's younger brother will be fighting next month so they are very busy in the gym.

"David (Benavidez) (7-0) is fighting on April 25th at the Celebrity Theatre so I am getting them both ready.  We are very busy and very excited right now," Benavidez told BoxingScene.com.

The Celebrity Theater in Phoenix is a great boxing venue. Not a bad seat in the house.

Benavidez is bringing down Paez in weight, but the fight should be good. I think Amir Imam would of been a good opponent.

Jose Benavidez Jr. vs. Jorge Paez Jr. and Antonio Orozco vs. Emmanuel Taylor should be a pretty entertaining doubleheader.

Wasn't impressed by Benavidez against Herrera, and this fight does nothing for Benavidez at all.
