Jonathan Oquendo's Girlfriend is Declared Brain Dead

By Rey Colon

Melanie Miranda Colon, the girlfriend of super bantamweight Jonathan Oquendo, was declared brain dead by doctors at a medical facility in Puerto Rico. Last weekend, Oquendo and his girlfriend were involved in a tragic accident when their ATV was struck by another vehicle.

Oquendo, the vehicle's driver, suffered a broken right elbow, several cuts, and bruises on various parts of his body. The injuries forced him to withdraw from a scheduled fight on the Juan Manuel Lopez-Orlando Salido undercard on March 10th. However, his girlfriend, 20-years-old, suffered a fractured skull.

The uncle of Oquendo's girlfriend broke the news to a newspaper in San Juan. He thanked all of the nurses and doctors who tried to save her life.
