Promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank is focused on placing WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelling Pavlik in the best fight possible - against undisputed super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe of Wales. He would like the fight to take place in a Las Vegas venue in October. Calzaghe has said for some time that he wants to return to the ring in November. Arum told MaxBoxing/BoxingScene.com's Steve Kim that fight with Calzaghe has a good possibility of being made.
"My first priority is Joe Calzaghe. That's a huge fight and if that fight takes place - it would take place in Las Vegas. So that's my first priority. That's priority number one. I really believe they are nice people the Calzaghe people. Frank Warren, his promoter is a dear friend of mine. They want to make the fight. I think the economics will come together and I think that fight will be made. That fight will be in October, not September. If the Calzaghe fight can't be made, then Kelly will fight in September and we will look to fight in Ohio, probably Cleveland," Arum said.
If Calzaghe is unavailable, Marco Antonio Rubio, Ricardo Mayorga are two possible opponents for the September date.
"We have to sit down and figure out who is available and so forth. There are a lot of guys on the list. Rubio is a possibility. Mayorga is a possibility. King is calling me about Mayorga. But, over the next week or so, I'm going to spend trying to make a Calzaghe fight," Aurm said.
As far as Pavlik facing Roy Jones Jr. or Bernard Hopkins, Arum is not interested.
"I like Roy Jones, but fighters like Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins - enough! Let them go. Let them retire and let the young guys fight."
