Jessie Vargas Hopes Liam Smith Clash Gets Finalized For December

Recent reports have surfaced that a super welterweight clash pitting former 2 division champion Jessie Vargas (29-2-2) against former WBO 154 pound champion Liam Smith (28-2-1) will take place in Saudi Arabia on the undercard of the Andy Ruiz-Anthony Joshua rematch which takes place on December 7th. The card will be streamed live on DAZN.

While he is is very interested in the fight, Vargas said that a deal still hasn’t been finalized.

“It still hasn’t been confirmed. I hope so though. They mentioned his name to me about a month ago and said I could be fighting on either December 7th or 14th,” Vargas told BoxingScene.com.

December 14th has been mentioned as the date for the return of Daniel Jacobs who would face Julio César Chávez Jr. on DAZN if their fight is finalized.

Vargas captured his world titles in the super lightweight and welterweight divisions and has stated on several occasions that he wants to become a 3 weight class world champion.

In April he tested the waters above the 147 pound welterweight weight limit with when he faced faded former champion Humberto Soto at a 151 pound catchweight.  Vargas passed the test with flying colors, stopping Soto in 6 rounds.

As far as potentially fighting in the Middle East, Vargas said, “Fighting in Saudi Arabia would be a unique  experience for sure.”
