Reno, Nevada - Former unified super welterweight champion Jarett Hurd is in town to support his friend Shakur Stevenson who takes on Joet Gonzalez tomorrow night for the vacant WBO featherweight title. The fight headlines a card promoted by Top Rank Inc. that will stream live on ESPN+. Bantamweight contenders Joshua Greer and Antonio Nieves will square off in the co-feature bout.
There hasn’t been any love lost between Stevenson and Gonzalez. The animosity began when Stevenson started dating Gonzalez’s sister and that hasn’t sat well with Joet and the animosity hasn’t died down in the lead up to the fight.
Hurd believes that extra spark gives both fighters even more motivation to try to win.
“It’s going to be a great fight. Shakur is in top shape and what makes this fight so great is there is a little bit of heat up in there - bad blood. I can’t wait for the turn out man. It’s always a great fight when Shakur wants to hurt somebody,” Hurd told BoxingScene.com after the weigh in.
According to Hurd, Stevenson had a tremendous camp and is ready to have his coming out party on Saturday night. He expects the 2016 Olympic silver medalist will put on a spectacular performance.
“We are definitely going with Shakur baby. Shakur is definitely going to take this one. He has been waiting for his opportunity. He’s been moving at the right pace and he’s more than ready,” Hurd stated.
