Undefeated junior middleweight prospect James Kirkland was on hand last Saturday in Las Vegas to see Nonito Donaire's vicious one punch knockout of Fernando Montiel on Saturday night. Both fighters are managed by well known boxing manager Cameron Dunkin. Kirkland is known for his punching power and in 2009 he appeared on a collision course with fellow heavy hitter Alfredo Angulo.
Things changed in a hurry when Kirkland went to prison on a probation violation. A little over a year after Kirkland was sent to prison, Angulo was found to be in the United States illegally and hasn't been heard from since.
BoxingScene.com asked Kirkland if he ever thinks about what could have been if the two sluggers had met in the ring. "Yeah man I have thought about that. Eveyone wanted to see that fight. I would hear about it a lot. That's something I really wanted to do."
Kirkland has fights scheduled for March and April and then hopes to get back in the mix for a bigger fight. When asked if he still held out hope to face Angulo sometime down the road, Kirkland told BoxingScene, "Most definitely. After a couple fights I will be ready for a big fight. Hopefully he (Angulo) can get his situation straightened out and get back in the ring."
