Hopkins Urges Mayweather, McGregor: Make Fight Free For Fans!

The forthcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor should be made free to fans, according to former middleweight and light heavyweight world champion Bernard Hopkins.

It was announced this month that boxing legend Mayweather would meet UFC star McGregor in a hotly anticipated superfight on August 26, following two years of verbal sparring between the two men.

Hopkins is currently on the promotion trail for September's middleweight showdown between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Gennady Golvkin and believes the Mayweather-McGregor "soap opera" is denying that fight its share of the limelight.

And the 52-year-old has suggested Mayweather and McGregor could afford to give away tickets to the fight for nothing, calling on UFC president Dana White to make a "big statement".

"To me it's clear they want the soap opera conversation. It's clear they want to try to derail the faking and downplay the reality of what really matters right now," he told Omnisport.

"Mayweather and McGregor, you know and I know, you don't have to be on our side, be on boxing's side. That is not a boxing match.

"If you want to talk about a spectacle, a show, by all means spend $4,000-$5,000 on a ticket. Maybe they will give it to you for free and make a real statement of jealousy.

"If the McGregor fight is so much bigger than... Hold up, I've got a proposal.

"If this is so great and so good, and we know McGregor - I'm not his accountant but I'm pretty sure he don't have to go out and put a sign in his hand and ask somebody to give him some money for food.

"And Mayweather, whose name is Money. How can your name be Money when you don't have any?

"Give it to the fans free! You're lights ain't going to go off tomorrow. God knows they're not going to take your car away - you've got 20 of them, right?

"So if you really want to box for the love of boxing, then I'll tell you what to do.

"You want to make a big statement Dana White? Give it to them free."

Discussing the clash between Canelo and GGG, Hopkins added: "A fight and a boxing match of this magnitude in September, we know you have to pay for. You pay for what you get. Watch a real fight!"

THe biggest problem with this fight is Floyd could end up killing Conor in the ring and that would not be good for boxing.

Why would they give it for free? Mcgregor has a big following to make this PPV worthy.

Hopkins is such an idiot. Poor bloke just rambles on and on, taking forever to get to the point.

Damn Hop you counting another man's pockets? Come on you gotta be better than that. What make it worse his explanation is backwards. Floyd/McGregor have always said this fight was only about money; it was Oscaar and GB talking about…
